He lectured at the Sorbonne and Oxford, served briefly on the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation in Paris after World War I, and spent fifteen months in 1938-1939 imprisoned in Dachau and Buchenwald, where he developed heart disease. He was born in Vienna, Austria, and died in Oxted, England.
