July 24, 1899, College Point, Queens, New York, N.Y.; christened William; after high school, entered the Capuchin novitiate and took the religious name Apollinaris; ordained May 30, 1926, becoming Father Apollinaris, OFM Cap; Columbia University, School of Journalism, 1926-1928, master of science; transferred to St. John Church in downtown Manhattan in 1936; on September 18, 1945, he was consecrated a bishop and returned to his baptismal name of William; in time would revert to his Capuchin religious name, often styling himself Apollinaris William Baumgartner; arrived on Guam, Oct. 23, 1945; because Guam was not yet a diocese, Bishop Baumgartner had to be given a titular See, that of Joppe; Vicariate Apostolic was elevated to diocesan status on Oct. 4, 1965, Diocese of Hagåtña; d. Dec. 18, 1970)
