Albert Henry Spencer (1886-1971) joined the Sydney bookseller and publisher Angus & Robertson as an errand boy. Trained by George Robertson, he became an expert in Australiana. In 1922 he opened an antiquarian bookshop in Melbourne called Hill of Content. Spencer's clientele included Tom Roberts, Daryl and Lionel Lindsay, Sir William Dixson and Arthur Streeton. In 1951 he sold Hill of Content to Angus & Robertson. In 1952 Spencer was responsible for the transfer of Sir William Dixson's collection to the then Public Library of New South Wales. Later that year he started trading from home, calling the business the Shining Sea Bookroom. In 1957 he joined Angus & Robertson in their Melbourne bookshop. Ill health forced his retirement in the early 1960s.
