Richard Austin Bastow was born in Edinburgh in 1839, arriving in Tasmania, Australia in 1884. Originally an architectural draughtsman he took up botany as a hobby and moved to Victoria, eventually specialising in cryptogamic botony, working on mosses. Bastow was a keen member of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria. He died in 1920 in Melbourne, Victoria.
