Notes:
  • Laura Bogue Luffmann first major work was the novel, Gentleman Verschoyle (1875), published under the name Laura M. Lane, which she also used for novels and short stories for children, and a biography of the Swiss critic and theologian Alexander Vernet (1890), written while she was living in Switzerland. She met Charles (Bogue) Luffman (who changed his name to Carl Bogue Luffmann) in London in 1893, and moved to Australia and married him in Melbourne in 1895. Her marriage ended in 1902, and she moved to Sydney, where she worked as a journalist and editor, sometimes publishing as 'Una.' She took an active interest in women's rights, and was associated with the Women's Liberal League of New South Wales (Women's Reform League from 1915), serving in senior positions, writing for and editing the organisation's publications. Two of her later books, the children's novel Will Aylmer: A Tale of the Australian Bush (1909), and a novel for adults, A Question of Latitude (1911), are set in Australia. An unpublished autobiography, Impressions of Life by a Contented Woman, was written in the 1920s. The Laura Bogue Luffmann literary competition was established in her memory by Mary Gilmour.
