  • George Cherry (1820-1878) was an English artist who had studied art and miniature painting before coming to Australia on the HMS Bangalore in 1848. He established himself as a photographer and artist in Hobart. He lived in Hobart from 1848 to 1868, and from 1849-1852 was Assistant Superintendent of Convicts on Norfolk Island. He toured northern Tasmania circa 1870. In 1855 he married Mary Ann Matilda, daughter of Captain James of the East India Company. Their daughter Ada (later Whiting) became a painter of miniatures.
