  • Wikipedia 10 May 2019: (Luke Wadding, O.F.M. (16 October 1588 – 18 November 1657), was an Irish Franciscan friar and historian. He was born in Waterford, and studied in Lisbon and at the University of Coimbra. He joined the Franciscans in 1607 and was ordained priest in 1613. Iin 1617 he was made President of the Irish College at the University of Salamanca, and the next year went to Rome, where he collected funds for the opening in 1625 of the College of St Isidore for Irish students. He was rector for 15 years and built up the library. He was a staunch supporter if the Irish cause, a tradition which the college continued to follow.
