Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 18 April 2021: (Alfonso Bernard O'Reilly (1903-1975), bushman and author, was born on 3 September 1903 at Hartley, New South Wales. After finishing school in 1917, Bernard joined his brothers on the land in the McPherson Ranges, Queensdland, adjacent to the Lamington National Park; he worked as a dairy farmer and park ranger. In 1937, following the disappearence of a plane on 19 February, Bernard was responsible for finding and rescuinbg two survivors. He served in the Second World War in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo. He spent much of the rest of his life in the mountains of the Queensland-New South Wales border region; he published four books, tourist pamphlets and a book of verse.
