Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 28 October 2021: (Herbert Robinson Brookes (1867-1963), businessman, pastoralist, public official and philanthropist, was born on 20 December 1867 at Sandhurst (Bendigo), Victoria. He grew up in Melbourne and in rural South Australia; his father was a successful entrepreneur. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with honours in civil engineering (B.C.E., 1890), and worked in managing several small Victorian mines, then moved into managing larger industries such as Austral Otis and Australian Paper Mills, also family pastoral holdings. He maintained an active social and cultural life; he insisted that managers' wives on pastoral stations be paid for the work they did there.
