The Royal Ballet was formed on 31 October l956 under a royal charter granted by Queen Elizabeth II to the Sadler's Wells Ballet, the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet and the Sadler's Wells School. The Sadler's Wells Ballet remained at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and became the Royal Ballet, first performance 4 February l957. On the same date the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet moved to Covent Garden and became The Royal Ballet Touring Company; becoming eventually (l976) known as the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet.
