Old catalog heading: Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, Paris
The Académie royale des inscriptions et belles lettres was established 4 January 1716, as the successor of the Académie royale des inscriptions et médailles. It was dissolved on 8 August 1793. In 1803, four classes were established under the Institut national de France, the third being the Classe d'histoire et de littérature ancienne, which continued under the Institut impérial de France and the Institut royal de France. The name Académie royale des inscriptions et belles lettres was restored by the king to the 3rd classe of the Institut royal de France on 21 March 1816; however, the term "royale" was rarely included in the name as shown on the academy's publications from that time on, so it was predominantly known as the Académie des inscriptions & belles lettres (or Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres) from 1816.
