Notes:
  • ADB online 12 January 2017 (George Henry Haydon (1822-1891), writer and artist, was born on 26 August 1822 at Heavitree, Devon, England. He was apprenticed to an architect in Exeter in 1837. Looking for adventure, he arrived in the Theresa at Melbourne in July 1840. He worked as an architect and in various other jobs; he was one of Melbourne's first drawing masters and also sold sketches to the papers. Haydon was concerned about Aboriginals, and stoutly defended them against the prejudices of the colonists, studied their language and customs, and earned their respect. He was opposed to the protection system. He returned to England in 1845 and set up in Exeter as an authority on emigration for some years, afterwards moving to London. He wrote several books about Australia and illustrated others, and maintained contact with friends. He died at home, in Putney Lower Common, on 9 November 1891.) http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/haydon-george-henry-3735
