  • ADB online, viewed 26 January 2018 (Isaacs, Sir Isaac Alfred, 1855-1948, governor-general, judge and politician, was born on 6 August 1855 at Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. He grew up in northeast Victoria, and studies law at the University of Melbourne (LL.M. 1885). By 1890 he was well established as a barrister, and in April 1892 was elected as a member of the Victorian Parliament, while continuing to practise as a barrister. He was also active in the Australian federation movement. In 1901 he was elected to the Australian Parliament. He was appointed to the Australian High Court on 12 October 1906, becoming Chief Justice on 5 April, but on 22 January became Governor-General, retiring on 23 January 1936. He was active in retirement, onb social and constitution matters, and in Jewish affairs, often controversially.
