Wikipedia 23 April 2020: (Barthold Georg Niebuhr (27 August 1776 – 2 January 1831) was a Danish–German statesman, banker, and historian who became Germany's leading historian of Ancient Rome and a founding father of modern scholarly historiography. he was born in Copenhagen. He entered the university of Kiel, left in 1796, and travelled in England and Scotland. He lived in Copenhagen 1800-1806, then moved to Prussia, working in government finance; but he found himself temperamentally unsuited to politics. In 1810 he accepted an appointment as royal historiographer and professor at the university of Berlin. In 1816 he was appointed ambassador to Rome. During this period he discovered unpublished works of classical authors.
