Founded in 1857 as the Seminary West of the Suwanne River, and later became the Florida State College. In 1905 it became the Florida State College for Women. In 1977 it became the Florida State University. Works by these bodies are entered under the name used at the time of publication.

Minutes book of the Florida Institute, 1856-1905 Finding Aid - Collection Historical Note (This book contains the minutes of meetings from the very early years of Florida State University. The Florida Institute opened in 1855, offering both a college program and preparatory departments, but did not include a normal school or teacher-training programs. Tallahassee was designated as the site for the Seminary West of the Suwanee in 1857, absorbing existing Florida Institute.
