He arrived in Sydney with his family, aged 5, and moved to Melbourne in 1841. He became a pastoralist, until he moved to Sydney in 1869, becoming a magistrate and gold commissioner. In 1895 he retired to Melbourne, and died on 11 March 1915. He had written seriously since 1870.
