In 1879 he succeeded Ashton Oxenden as Metropolitan of Canada. He was born in London, and graduated from Wadham College, Oxford, in 1826, and was ordained priest in Exeter in 1829. he was a supporter of the Oxford Movement and promoted the Gothic architectural style. he was appointed first Bishop of Fredericton in 1844, consecrated and enthroned in 1845.
