Notes:
  • Dorothy Braund was born in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern on 15 November 1926. She attended St Margaret's School (1933-40) and Lauriston Girls' School in Malvern (1941-43). In 1943 a family friend suggested that she study art with George Bell. Bell, however, thought that she was too young and advised her to enrol in the National Gallery School. In 1944 she began studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and in the following year began at the National Gallery School under William Rowell and Charles Wheeler. In 1945 she exhibited for the first time with the Contemporary Art Society. In 1949 she finished at the National Gallery School, having been awarded several art prizes. She then began studies with George Bell. She taught for two mornings each week at Lauriston Girls' School, Malvern, from 1952 and in the middle of 1955 was appointed art mistress at St Catherine's School in Malvern. Dorothy Braund died in 2013.
