Wikipedia April 16, 2020 (Richard Porson (25 December 1759 – 25 September 1808) was an English classical scholar. He was the discoverer of Porson's Law. he was born at East Ruston, Norfolk, near North Walsham. He was outstanding at school, and entered Trinity College Cambridge in 1778 (B.A. 1782, and elected a fellow of Trinity; M.A. 1785. He began preparing editions of classical authors from this time, withcareful textual collation and criticism, and wrote critical articles. In 1792 his fellowship ceased, since he remained a layman. He moved to London, but was shortly installed as the Regius Greek Professor at Cambridge, still working on editions of Greek authors; some Cambridge editions did not name him as editor.
