  • Te Ara, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (online) 14 July 2022: (Helmut Herbert Hermann Rehbein was born in Potsdam, Germany, on 15 February 1913; he moved to Berlin in 1919, and from 1931 to 1935 studied theology at the University of Berlin. He was brought to New Zealand, just before war began, by the Presbyterian church, and appointed to Knox College, Dunedin, gaining tenure in 1947; in 1946 he changed his surname to Rex; in 1948 he was awarded an MA from the University of Otago for his work on Kierkegaard. He was made professor of church history at Knox, and completed his doctorate from the University of Tùˆbingen in 1954.
