Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 4 April 2020: (William Bland (1789-1868), medical practitioner and politician, was born on 5 November 1789 in London. He trained in medicine and attained the rank of naval surgeon in 1812. He founght a duel in Bombay, was tried and sentenced to transportation, arriving in Hobart Town and onwards to Sydney in 1814. He was pardoned in 1815. After various troubles with Macquarie's administration, he became involved with the Benevolent Society and with education. He also became involved in politics, and was elected in the first representative Legislative Council in 1842. He remained active in surgery and medicine until 1868; he died in Sydney on 21 July that year.) http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/bland-william-1793
