Born near Parramatta, New South Wales; at 17 he made his first journey of exploration and reached the Berrima-Bong Bong district; made several overland explorations, including one with Captain William Hovell to Port Phillip; married Elizabeth Dight; elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1860; established a merino stud with his nephew; died at Yass, April 1873.
