Born at New Wortley, Yorkshire, England 1864; worked for an estate agent, solicitor's office, in a music store; invited to do drawings for Yorkshire Gossip when only 14; provided posters for a theatrical company and designed costumes; went to London 1884 and worked as an illustrator; married Lilian Farrer; sailed to Sydney 1885; returned to England 1888; established himself as a leading black and white artist; fell ill 1903 and died in Melina Place, St. John's Wood, England.
