The United States Army Corps of Engineers was first established in 1779, but disbanded in 1783. It was organized again in 1802. In 1831 the United States Topographical Bureau was organized. It was succeeded in 1837 by the Corps of Topographical Engineers, which itself merged into the Corps of Engineers in 1863. In 1912 the Board on Engineer Troops was formed to replace the Board of Officers of the Corps of Engineers. In 1917 it was absorbed by the Corps of Engineers.
