  • Wikipedia 1 May 2020: (The Reverend Lancelot Edward Threlkeld (20 October 1788 – 10 October 1859) was an English missionary, primarily based in Australia. His work in Australia did much to increase knowledge of Aboriginal languages. he was born in Southwark (now in London). In 1813 he began training with the London Missionary Society (LMS) and in 1814 was assigned to the Society Islands. After working in Raiatea he moved to Sydney, N.S.W., and the L.M.S. sent him to work with Aboriginals at Lake Macquarie, and particularly to learn their language, Awabakal. In 1834 he published his book "An Australian Grammar" about the language of the Hunter's River area at Lake Macquarie. In 1828 the L.M.S. dismissed Threlkeld, but he secured some support from Governor Darling and set up the Ebenezer Mission, which was eventually closed at the end of 1841. In 1842 Threlkeld became pastor of the Congregational church at Watsons Bay, Sydney, and in 1845 he was appointed minister of the Mariners' church at Sydney, a position in which he continued for the rest of his life. He continued working on the Awabakal language intermittently, and continued to be active in Aboriginal welfare matters.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancelot_Threlkeld
