Wikipedia 26 March 2023: (John Martin Douglas Pringle, usually known as John Douglas Pringle (28 June 1912 – 4 December 1999) was a Scottish-born journalist and author who moved in 1952 to Australia, wheree he became a prominent newspaper editor and social commentator. He was born in the town of Hawick, Roxburghshire, and studied at Lincoln College, Oxford. In August 1934 he joined The Manchester Guardian; he found his talent lay as a leader writer and editor. He moved to Australia for his health, having been affected by tuberculosis, edited the Sydney Morning Herlad 1952-1957 but was frustrated by the owners' control. He was deputy editor of the Observer in London 1958-1963; back in Australia, he edited the Sydney Morning Herlad again 1965-1970, then retired from fulltime journalism, continuing to write articles and several books, also pursuing his interest in ornithology, writing three books on Australian birds.
