Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 18 Feb 2025: (ir Henry Parkes (1815-1896), politician and journalist, was born on 27 May 1815 in Warwickshire, England. In 1839, after unsuccessful attempts to start his own business, he emigrated to New South Wales. Again unsuccessful, he began writing for newspapers and published some poetry. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1854, then in 1856 to the new Legislative Assembly. He was in and out of parliament until his bankruptcy in 1870 forced his resignation, but he returned in 1872, developed a reputation as a free-trader, and became premier. In 1875-77 he was in opposition, and was then premier again. Legislation in 1880 led to separation of Catholic schools from the state system. He lost government in 1883, became premier again in 1887, lost that role but returned in 1889, and thereafter was a leader in the movement for Australian federation. He lost his seat in the 1895 election. He died suddenly at home in Annandale in 1896.) https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/parkes-sir-henry-4366
