Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 18 April 2022: (Bernard Patrick O'Dowd (1866-1953), poet, radical and parliamentary draughtsman, was born on 11 April 1866 at Beaufort, Victoria. He worked as a teacher, , published poetry, and in 1885 joined the Public Solicitor's Office in Melbourne; he also studied at the University of Melbourne (B.A. 1891, LL.B. 1895); he joined many clubs, particularly the Melbourne Progressive Lyceum, and corresponded with Walter Whitman. In October 1897, with two colleagues, he began publishing the radical weekly, The Tocsin, writing as Gavah the Blacksmith. From 1903 he published further volumes of poetry. Privately he joined the Theosophical Society, the Australian Church, and later the Free Religious Fellowship, and various socialist organizations. Professionally, in 1887 he was assistant librarian in the Supreme Court, and wrote and edited several law books; in 1913 he was appointed assistant parliamentary draughtsman, and was State parliamentary draughtsman 1931-1935.
