  • Wikipedia 3 May 2020: (John Strachan (1778–1867) was a notable figure in Upper Canada and the first Anglican Bishop of Toronto. He is best known as a political bishop who held many government positions and promoted education from common schools to helping to found the University of Toronto. He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 12 April 1778; he graduated from King's College, Aberdeen, in 1797. In 1799 he emigrated to Kingston, Upper Canada. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1803. He worked as a teacher and a pastor. After the war of 1812-1813 he was a fierce British loyalist and held government positions. In 1839, he was consecrated the first Anglican bishop of Toronto, and in 1841 he resigned from government positions.
