Wikipedia 16 September 2018 (General Sir William Francis Patrick Napier KCB (7 December 1785-12 February 1860) was an Irish soldier in the British Army and a military historian. He was born in Calbridge, near Dublin, joined the British Army in 1800. He retired in 1819, turned first to art then to writing. In 1841 he was promoted to general as Governor of Guernsey, and to Lieutenant-General in 1856.
