After suffering seriously with polipmyelitis in his childhood, he studied philosophy and Lutheran theology in Leipzig and Erlangen. He separated from the Lutherans and later was ambivalent towards Nazism, rejecting antisemitism. He died at his property Schloss Elmau (near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria) on 4 January 1949.)
