Oxford Dictionary of National biography, viewed online May 13, 2016 (Montagu [née Robinson], Elizabeth (1718-1800), author and literary hostess, was born at York on 2 October 1718, the first daughter and fifth child of Matthew Robinson (1694-1778) of Edgeley and West Layton, Yorkshire, and his wife, Elizabeth (c.1697-1746). Elizabeth Montagu has been called the 'queen of the blue stockings'. Montagu's letters (written over nearly seventy years) are among the most important surviving collections from the eighteenth century.
