D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago (1944); she received a Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1953; from 1944 until her retirement in 1974 she worked in various institutions as a librarian and lecturer in the field of Egyptology, including the University of Chicago Oriental Institute, New School for Social Research (New York), Yale University Library, and University of California Los Angeles, where she was Near East Bibliographer and Lecturer; in 1982 she moved to Israel where she taught Egyptian literature at the Hebrew University of Jersulem until she retired in 1988; she died March 27, 2004 in Jerusalem; in 1973 she published the first volume of the Ancient Egyptian Literature (abbr. AEL), annotated translations of Old and Middle Kingdom texts; in 1976 the second volume of AEL containing New Kingdom texts appeared, followed in 1980 by the third dealing with the first millennium BCE literature)
