In 1949, Batavia was renamed Djakarta. In 1950, the government of the city was named Djakarta-Raya, while the city as a geographical entity popularly continued to be called Djakarta. As a result of the orthographic reform in 1972, these names became Jakarta Raya and Jakarta respectively.
