  • Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 31 May 2019: (William Bramwell Withers (1823-1913), journalist and historian, was born on 27 July 1823 at Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. From 1843 he was a lifelong opponent of capital punishment. He went to Natal (South Africa) in 1849, where he farmed, wrote for newspapers and learned to set type in Dutch and English. Attracted by the gold discoveries, he came to Melbourne (Victoria) in 1852, was unsuccessful with gold, and worked as a journalist and comnpositor, joining the Ballarat Star in 1855. He wrote a history of Ballarat, compiling his sources with care, published by the Star in 1870. In 1901 he left Ballarat for Sydney, and by 1907 was living in Dulwich Hill, where he died on 14 July 1913.) http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/withers-william-bramwell-4879
