She was born in Bushy Park, Dublin, Ireland. In 1853 she began contributing to journals and papers in Dublin. She married first Adam Murray Stewart, who died in 1856; as a widow she moved to London, and continued writing. She frequently visited Paris; on Easter Sunday 1871 she travelled to Paris, returning the next day to England with news of the Paris Commune.
