Wikipedia 5 May 2020: (Very Reverend Henry Duncan DD FRSE (8 October 1774 – 12 February 1846) was a Scottish minister, geologist and social reformer. The minister of Ruthwell parish church in Dumfriesshire, he founded the world's first commercial savings bank. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1839. He was also an author, publisher and philanthropist. He was born at Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire, and began his career in business; he soon left to study at Edinburgh and Glasgow for the ministry of the Church of Scotland. He was ordained as minister of the Church of Scotland and became Minister at Ruthwell in Dumfriesshire in 1799, where he spent the rest of his life. He was greatly concerned with the welfare of his congregation in the widest sense, hence his promotion of the novel concept of a savings bank, paying interest on deposits. In 1823 Duncan received the degree of D.D. from the University of St. Andrews. he also had interests in geology and as an antiquarian.
