  • Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 25 March 2023: (John Raymond Wilton (1884-1944), mathematician, was born on 2 May 1884 at Belfast (Port Fairy), Victoria and grew up in South Australia. He studied at the University of Adelaide (B.Sc. 1903; also D.Sc. 1914) then at Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A. 1907, M.A. 1911). In 1909 Wilton was appointed assistant lecturer in mathematics at the University of Sheffield. After the war, he joined the Society of Friends. In 1919 he was appointed professor in the University of Adelaide. Beyond mathematics, Wilton's prime interests were music and literature.
