Born in Melbourne 1919; educated at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne; served in the Royal Australian Navy; was a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford; Dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Melbourne and Vice-Chancellor of the Universities of New England and Queensland; served as Australia's Governor General from 1977 to 1982; Provost of Oriel College, Oxford; patron of the St. Kilda Football Club; awarded a Knight Bachelor; Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Knight of the Order of Australia, Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
