Dictionary of Irish Biography (online) 23 Feb 2025: (Figgis, Darrell (1882-1925), journalist, author, and nationalist propagandist, was born 17 September 1882 at Glen-na-Smoil, Palmerston Park, Rathmines, Dublin. After his family spent time in Ceylon he returned to London, where he was employed 1911-1916 by his first publisher, J.M. Dent & Sons; he was a prolific writer in this period. He joined the Irish national movement, was an active participant in bringing German arms into Ireland, and was among those imprisoned after the Easter uprising in Dublin in 1916. He continued to write; he fell out with the Sinn Féin leadership in 1918, but remained active, and played a substantial part in drafting the Irish constitution in 1922. Though elected to the dáil he became seriously unpopoular. His final novel, The return of the hero (1923) was published under the name Michael Ireland. Both his first and his second wives committed suicide; he also committed suicide in Bloomsbury, London, on 27 October 1925.) https://www.dib.ie/biography/figgis-darrell-a3078
