He probably received musical training from his father, conductor of the liedertafel in his home town. After Alpen's arrival in Melbourne in 1858, he studied harmony and counterpoint with Charles Horsley. From 1862-5, Alpen led the Vocal Philharmonic Society in the NSW town of Tumut ... By 1865, Alpen had accepted a position as a church organist in Albury, NSW. The NSW Council of Education employed him as an itinerant singing master in the Albury district from 1873. The newly established Department of Public Instruction appointed him to work as a singing master in Sydney in 1880. He later taught singing at the Fort Street and Hurlstone Teacher Training Colleges, and in 1884 he became the Superintendent of Music in the Department ... He conducted over ten thousand school children at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, a performance which included his work Federated Australia. Alpen served as an organist at a number of Sydney churches, including St Patrick's, Church Hill, and St Benedict's, Broadway. He wrote numerous settings of the mass, and also popular songs.
