The American Interplanetary Society was established in 1930. The name was changed in 1934 to the American Rocket Society. The Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences was founded in 1932. The name was changed in 1960 to the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences. In 1963, the American Rocket Society and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences merged to form the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
